Girl Talk approaches the topic of puberty from a holistic perspective, through social, emotional and physical
lenses. We redefine the experience of the transition to womanhood by providing a safe space that celebrates girls
through dance, art, stories and engaging activities. In order to alleviate weirdness, stigma, shame or shyness in
association to growing up, Girl Talk approaches these conversations with pure intentions that center our exchanges
around education, awareness, safety and health. When girls are able to ask questions and share in a safe space,
then dialog around this topic is normalized. As a result, our children are less likely to seek answers from unreliable or
unsafe sources, including the internet or the media.
It is extremely important to girls’ well-being and self-esteem that we filter and reframe misconceptions,
shame and discomfort associated with their journey into womanhood. We want girls to know about their bodies, learn
how to talk about their bodies, and feel safe and comfortable in them.
I consent for my child to attend Girl Talk, which is a Workshop that will include literacy and
awareness about the following:
- Body changes during puberty, including vocabulary to refer to body parts
- Menstruation, hygiene, health and the woman’s cycle
- Tools to support changing bodies, including menstrual products, bras, deodorant
I understand that this workshop is based on a trusting relationship between the facilitators and students,
and that the facilitators will keep information shared by the students confidential, except in certain situations in which
an ethical responsibility limits confidentiality. The facilitators will immediately notify the parent in the event that a
student reveals information that affects the child’s health and safety.
I understand that menstruation is a universal topic and that discussions will respect religious and cultural
plurality. I understand that the topic of intercourse will not be discussed, and that this workshop focuses on providing
girls with an understanding of menstruation and bodily changes during puberty. Girl Talk aims to promote healthy
body image and a pure, confident self-concept that is free from negativity through cultivating conversations
about body changes and puberty.
